In loving memory

Sanjeev Mangla

संजीव मंगला

3 May 1966 – 19 September 2018

M.A., LL.B., D.J., M.S.W. · Advocate · Journalist · Social worker · Arya Samaji

One of those rare people a whole town claims as its own. Many simply called him 'Guru ji'.

His life

A fearless pen. As a senior journalist with Dainik Jagran in Palwal, colleagues called him one of the foundations of the paper in the district — outspoken, fearless and never willing to compromise his principles. Fittingly, his birthday, 3 May, is World Press Freedom Day.

A voice in the courts. He practised as an advocate in Palwal and served as President of the Palwal Bar Association. Young lawyers still call him their ideal.

Service to the town. Ex-Chairman of the Palwal Improvement Trust and a member of the District Planning Board, he gave his time to the Arya Samaj, Lions Club, Mahavir International and many more. He studied at Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut.

A champion of causes. Through the organisations he led and the articles he wrote, he kept the eye-donation campaign alive in Palwal — and after he passed, his own eyes were donated so that others could see. The marriages of daughters from poor families, eye-operation and health camps, and planting trees with the Lions Club were the work closest to his heart.

Pride in his community. As President of the Shri Vaish Aggarwal Sabha, Palwal, he worked for unity in the community and guided its young people, and he had the life of Maharaja Agrasen published in Palwal so that the new generation would know its heritage. In 2018 he was appointed Vice-Convener of the Legal Cell of the Agrawal Vaishya Samaj, Haryana.

The man. Cheerful, warm and simple — he always listened to the poor, never took a rupee he hadn't earned, and was respected wherever he went.
